(January 6, 2010, New York) – Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of Juan D. Reyes III as a partner in the Real Estate Group, resident in the firm’s New York office.

“Juan rounds out Reed Smith’s commercial real estate practice in New York with the addition of his broad experience in zoning, as well as his extensive knowledge of how New York City government works – which is often the key to navigating zoning and other real estate matters and challenges,” said David C. Evans, firmwide head of the firm’s Real Estate Practice.  “Because zoning issues often need to be resolved on the front-end in so many deals, his work positions the firm to provide transactional services from beginning to end for a broad range of regional and international clients.”

Mr. Reyes’ real estate practice is concentrated on land use, development and permitting, zoning, landmark and building code matters, and government approvals.  He has obtained variances and rezonings throughout New York City, and in particular lower Manhattan and Tribeca, as well as in the surrounding greater New York area.  His clients include residential and commercial developers and national retailers, along with not-for-profit institutions, corporations, education institutions, restaurants and entertainment facilities.  He previously served as counsel to the New York City Loft Board, Office of the Mayor, and as general counsel of the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals.

"Reed Smith’s international platform provides me with the opportunity to work on larger, more complex projects for major clients, including international players in the New York real estate market," Mr. Reyes said.  “My practice also can provide a springboard to more transactional real estate work for the real estate group.”

Mr. Reyes was formerly a partner with the New York firm of Riker Danzig.  Prior to that, he was a partner at Hartman & Craven.

“Based on both his experience and contacts, Juan works closely with legislative leaders, city agencies, and administrative departments in New York City,” said Robert A Nicholas, Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s New York office.  “The knowledge, information, and contacts he has will add a new and valuable dimension to our New York capabilities.”

Mr. Reyes earned his law degree from the Quinnipiac University School of Law in 1995, and his B.A. in Political Science/English from Emory University in 1990.  He is admitted to the Bar in New York and Connecticut, and is a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, which allows him to serve the interests of a global clientele pursuing developments in New York and abroad.
