The International Labour Organization estimated that in 2021, 49.6 million people were living in modern slavery, 27.6 million of whom were in forced labor. Tackling this global issue is a priority for regulators and consumers alike. Businesses are facing unprecedented levels of scrutiny – a trend that is set to continue. In 2021, President Biden signed into law the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, and over the past few years in the UK, various Bills have been proposed and debated, which seek to strengthen the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015. In September 2022, the EU announced its own legislative proposal to ban goods made with forced labor, which could go beyond the ban imposed by the U.S.
